An old Thai poem that listed heteronyms

Thais have so many poems that listed words to help old-time students memorizing various spellings.   Recently, I was thinking of an old poem that I heard from my primary school 's dictation class (some 50 years ago) then I looked up the Net to fill in missing verses in my old memory. Then I found out that the current version shown elsewhere is slightly different from what I remember. So here I want to record my version so that it is not lost forever. This one is interesting that it listed Thai heteronyms, in Thai called คำพ้องรูป . The rhymes in the poem helped readers know how to vocalize particular ones in each pair. I decided then to high-light the heteronymous pairs later. It is interesting that some of the Thai words and meanings are no longer known to the current generation and they are not listed in latest Thai language dictionaries.

List of the Thai heteronymous pairs (reading differently despite same spellings) in the above poem. (Pronunciation guide is given in accompaning parenthesis, followed by its meaning, if known)

วัดเขมา   (Wat Khema, name of a Buddhist monastery, Khema is a Pali word, means pleasure) vs. โกฐเขมา (Kot Kamao, a medicinal herb,  Atractyloides lancea (Thung.) DC. ExH )

เพลา (Plao = lap, seated upper-legs, or an axle) vs. เพลา (Pe-la = time)
เสลา (Sela = stony mountain)  vs.  เสลา  (Salao = (adj. good-looking tall and slender tree shape,  vs. เสลา (Salao = a tree, Lagerstroemia tomentosa, C. Presl)
เสมา (Sema = marking stones of a Buddhist Uposoth (ordination hall) vs  เสมา  (Samao = a tree, Opuntia elatior Mill. ExS )
ต้นโสน or โสน  (Ton Sa-no = name of several plants in the genus Sesbania sp.)  คลองโสน (Khlong Sone = a canal named Sone)
เขดา (Ka-dao = hot or heat)  เขดา (Khe-da = ?? unlisted meaning in Thai dictionary, or perhaps it might refer to the Malaysian state of Kedah, formerly a state under Siam over a century ago)
ยี่โหง (Yi-ngow = a Chinese name)  โหง  (Hong = (adj.) unnatural death; quick (northwestern Thai))
ดงแขม (Dong-Kaem = a dense area of a water plant) เมืองแขม (Muang-Kamae = Khmer city, now spelled เมืองขแมร์ or เมืองเขมร )
คุมเหง (Kum-heng = subdue)  เหง  (Nge = a Chinese name)
หวงแหน  (Huang-haen = selfish, unwilling to share)  แหน (Nae = a water plant, )

พวง (Pa-wong = worry, now often spell as พะวง ) vs. พวง (Puang = a bouquet, a bunch of flowers)
บวงสรวง  (Buang-suang = worship) vs. สรวงเส (Suang-se = pleasantly talk to) It should be noted that now they are the same sound but perhaps they were previously pronounced differently in ancient time? If I would guess according to the rhyme of the poem, the latter word might have been pronounced as 'Sa-ruang-se' in early Bangkok period.
คำแหง (kam-haeng = strong, arrogant, but I think another meaning is brave)  vs. หน้าแหง  (na-ngae = a brave face after a shameful mishap)
ผอบ (porb = ??? unlisted in the (Royal Institute's) Thai dictionary) vs ผอบทอง (pa-ob-thong = a small golden spherical ridged container with a pointed lid, about the size that can fit in a palm, such as for keeping medicine or jewelry)

History of Thai Dictionaries

A brief history of Thai dictionaries
ประวัติย่อ พจนานุกรม ในไทย
Early dictionaries (of Ayutthaya and Early Bangkok period)

The first dictionary in Thailand was prepared by a French priest Rev. Louis Laneau (1664-1689, ~B.E. 2207-2236) during the reign of King Narai the Great, of Ayutthaya Kingdom. It was a French-Thai and Thai-French dictionary in the form of written manuscript using Roman alphabets.

In a famous Thai language textbook and literature จินดามณี (Chindamanee) elegantly penned by พระโหราธิบดี (Phra Horathipati, 'the astrologers' lord') during the reign of King Narai the Great, there was a section named อักษรศัพท์ (vocabulary words) listing about 600 Thai words. (Note: I have not seen the manuscript so I don't know if descriptions on meanings were given for the words or not. If not, as I tend to guess, it might be just a compendium of Thai vocabularies for students to learn to write words or to use as a guide to practice penmanship)

Later dictionaries were produced during Bangkok as the Capital.

A Thai dictionary, also in manuscript form, called คำฤษฎี  (pronounced 'Kam Risadee') was prepared in 1790-1853 (B.E. 2333-2396) during the reigns of King Rama II, III, IV, of Bangkok era by 3 Princes:  กรมพระปรมานุชิตชิโนรส , สมเด็จกรมพระยาเดชาดิสร , กรมหลวงภูวเนสตนรินทรฤทธิ์ . The dictionary described borrowed Sanskrit (unsorted) words used in Thai literatures at that time.

A bilingual dictionary, English-Thai and Thai-English dictionary, was said to be prepared by an American missionary, Rev. John Taylor Jones (1802-1851). But no evidence of this book remained.

A dictionary was prepared by Rev. J. Caswell and J.H. Chandler, in 1846 (B.E. 2407), as sorted-word manuscript, with spellings used during the reign of King Rama III (which is different from the current ones).

Around that time, Rev.  Jean-Baptiste Pallegoix prepared 2 dictionaries:-
 -  One is a bilingual Latin-Thai dictionary called Dictionarium Thai AD Usum Missions Siamensis (in B.E. 2393). A manuscript is kept at the rare document room at the Thailand National Library in Bangkok.
 -  Another dictionary สัพะ พะจะนะ พาสา ไท or Dictionarium Lingueae Thai was a quadrilingual Thai-Latin-French-English listing. There were some photo-reprints of this book commercially available in some bookstores.

This dictionary was later edited and improved upon by Rev. Jean-Louis Vey and he changed its Thai book title into ศริพจน์ภาษาไทย์ (Saripoj Pasa Thai) although Vey still gave credit to the previous author, Pallegoix. Its English title was Siamese French English dictionary by D.J.B. Pallegoix, which was published in B.E. 2439, and reprinted in B.E. 2542.

Rev. S. G. McFarland compiled the English and Siamese dictionary, and printed in B.E. 2408 in Phetchaburi province, comprising of around 7,500 words.

Improved versions was made by his son, Dr. George Bradley McFarland, and was called a Thai English Dictionary.
Note that Dr. G.B. McFarland was the first senior doctor and faculty member of of Siriraj Hospital (now part of Mahidol University). (G.B. McFarland was born in Phetchaburi, Thailand, so he as a Thai citizen who is also an American). He was later bestowed a government (aristocratic) official title by the King of Thailand as อำมาตย์เอก พระอาจวิทยาคม  (Translation of his title: First Class Lord,  The Knowledge Capable One). He was a founder of the Vidhayakom company in Thailand, when he created the first Thai language typewriters and sold them. (I believe he planned the keyboard layout, then order the equipment manufactured in the USA.)

A dictionary published in 1873 was อักขราภิธานศรับท์ (Akrapithansab) or Dictionary of the Siamese Language by Rev. Dan Beach Bradley (1804-1873). It should be noted that Bradley established a printing press at his home, which printed several books at that time.

There is another bilingual Thai-French dictionary: Dictionaire Francais-Siamois by Ven. Marie-Joseph Cuza, which was published in Bangkok in B.E. 2446 (1903)

ชื่อตัว Thai first names

Thai people of previous centuries mostly had mono-syllabic (first) names, except for the royalty, of course. This chart below depicting pictures of old monks, all passed-away, with their names clearly show that fact.

The exemplified picture taken from the net (and there are other similar versions) shows how Thais make a pun, using famously revered monks' names and their faces as words of blessing.

(First row: Be, Rich, Increase, Heap)
(Second row: Stay, Good, Having (Possess), Happy)
(Third row: Silver, Fresh, (silver+fresh constituted a new word to mean cash), Ring, Gold-Coming)

I hope anyone can make sense of the blessing message and its lightly funny aspect.

Before King Rama VI enacted the surname law around a century ago, Thai people did not have family names, but often they used description to distinguish people of identical name from each other, say Mr. A of B village, etc. This is also true for people of northern India during the Buddha's time, as written in the Tipitaka, but you have to know Pali to understand the descriptive meaning, like Mr. X the fatty one, Mrs. Y the mother of Mr. X, etc.

Thai people of my generation, in their fifties or older, have longer first names, but their names don't sound too sophisticated. However, people of newer generation, now in their twenties or younger have a another set of newly minted first names with sophisticated spelling and meanings, often multi-syllabic. We can now guess the age of Thai people from their first names alone without need to see their faces almost with certainty.

A table of 5000 most frequent Thai words from Thai National Corpus

I just stumbled into this.

Thai National Corpus (TNC) has a spreadsheet file listing 5000 most frequent 'Thai' words found from sampled texts, downloadable here.

I noticed that some of those are transcribed words from other languages. Also some are not words, but symbols typical to only Thai language, such as  ' ๆ ' , which is a stylized Thai number 2  ' ๒ ' which is used as a 'say the word twice' symbol, and ' ฯ '  which is a symbol to denote that the word (usually a noun) has been truncated from its full name. Some are just numbers, such as 1 2 3 and their corresponding Thai numbers, listing separately.

Dictionary of Thai - Tai-Yai

I just stumbled upon existence of this reference book by chance while cruising on the web. Here.
Ordering by mail is possible. Even if you can't read Thai texts, you can read still read the phone numbers to make an inquiry from that Thai web page.

The Thai - Tai-Yai Dictionary has been published since 2010 (B.E. 2552), commemorating the 600 anniversary of King Tilokarach (of Lanna Kingdom, whose capital was Chiang Mai) and 85 years of Rajabhat University at Chiang Mai. Compiled by many experts, it took over 10 years to finish it, and published by RUCM's Language Institute. Price for the book is 500 Baht.

I just noted down that I am interested in buying a copy. Perhaps next time, when I travel to Chiang Mai visit near Mae Rim, I 'll stop by at Rajabhat University at Chiang Mai to buy it and 'save' 100 Baht of mailing cost.
(Now I am rethinking since I am not sure if that will really 'save' money or 'spend' extra money on the fuel driving that far from my new northern home.)

(Anglicization of German / Denglish)
ตามข่าวนี้

หลายปีก่อน ก็ออกมาทีหนึ่งแล้ว ตอนนั้นเรียกกันว่า Deutschlich

Thai traditional unit of measurement, Wa, still used in land measurements, has been defined by a law for about a hundred years ago as, 1.0 Wa equal to 2.0 Meter. Based on archeological and linguistic evidences, it was actually 1.8 meter, esp. in pre-Bangkok era. Other ancient measurement units also scaled to this, which is different from when one mistook as 1 ancient Wa was 2.0 meter, which is not true.
Therefore, when interpreting very old manuscript, one should take this into consideration.

Note: I found cute 'No smoking' signs in northern Thai (Thai Lanna) dialect wordings (using central Thai scripts) compare to those in Lao scripts which I found in Laos earlier.

สันดาป ไม่เท่ากับ เมตะบอลิสซึม

"Combustion" is not equal to "metabolism".

ซื้อหนังสือ โยงใยที่ซ่อนเร้น มาตั้งนานแล้ว เพิ่งมีโอกาสอ่าน
เล่มนี้แปลจาก The Hidden Connections ของ Fritjof Capra

Lanna and Esan adage on changing human age

I came a cross an old printed Northern Thai (Lanna) adage posted on a house in Phrae province. Here are the words (in northern Thai dialect / spelling) and my own English translation.

ผมไปเจอภาพถ่ายเอกสารที่ บ้านประทับใจ ที่จังหวัดแพร่ เป็นภาษิตภาษาล้านนา เลยจดมา แล้วแปลไว้เองที่นี่

สังขารมนุษย์ (Nature of) Human bodies

สิบปี๋ อาบน้ำ บ่หนาว Ten years old, take a bath with cold water without shivering
ซาวปี๋ แอ่วสาว บ่ก่าย Twenty years old, visit girls without retreating
สามสิบปี๋ บ่หน่าย สังขาร Thirty years old, don't feel tired of (other people's) bodies
สี่สิบปี๋ เยี๊ยะการ เหมือนฟ้าผ่า Forty years old, doing works like thunder
ห้าสิบปี๋ สาวน้อยด่า บ่เจ็บใจ๋ Fifty years old, got bad-mouth by girls without being hurt
หกสิบปี๋ ไอเหมือน ฟานโขก Sixty years old, coughing like being hit by a deer (or ? cough like a deer ?)
เจ็ดสิบปี๋ มะโหก เต๋มตั๋ว Seventy years old, having diseases all over the body
แปดสิบปี๋ ใคร่หัว เหมือนไห้ Eighty years old, laughing looks like crying
เก้าสิบปี ไข้ก็ต๋าย บ่ไข้ก็ต๋าย Ninety years old, either getting sick or not, one is dead.

However, I then found from the Net a slightly different wordings for the North-eastern Thai (Esan) adage below.

จากนั้นไปเจอภาษิตอีสานคล้ายๆ กันบนเน็ต ก็เลยจดมา แล้วแปลเองเพิ่มเติม

สิบปี อาบน้ำบ่หนาว Ten years old, take a bath with cold water without shivering
ซาวปี เล่นสาวบ่เปิด Twenty years old, visit girls without retreating
สามสิบปี ตื่นก่อนไก่ Thirty years old, get up before rooster's crows
สี่สิบปี ไปไฮ่มาทอดหุ่ย Forty years old, sit idly after came back from the plantation
ห้าสิบปี ไปนามาทอดหุ่ย Fifty years old, sit idly after came back from the paddy field
หกสิบปี เป่าขลุ่ยบ่ดัง Sixty years old, can't blow a flute
เจ็ดสิบปี ตีระฆังบ่ม่วน Seventy years old, have no fun hitting a bell
แปดสิบปี หนักหนวกด่วนมาหู Eighty years old, ears are getting deaf
เก้าสิบปี พี่น้องมาดูร้องไห้ Ninety years old, visiting relatives feel like crying (sympathizing)
ร้อยปี บ่ไข้ก็บ่ตาย A hundred years old, if not getting sick, one is not dead yet
ร้อยสิบปี เห็นเดือนหงายว่าแม่นไฟไหม้ A hundred and ten years old, mistaking a waxing moon (lit sky) as fire
ร้อยซาวปี ไข้บ่ไข้ก็ตาย A hundred and twenty years old, whether getting sick or not, one is dead.

I also found another version, not sure of origin.
I believe all versions are derived from the same origin.

ไปเจออีกแบบ ก็เลยจดมา แปลเองอีก
ผมเชื่อว่า พวกนี้มีต้นกำเนิดเดียวกัน

สิบปี อาบน้ำบ่หนาว Ten years old, take a bath with cold water without shivering
ยี่สิบปี เว้าสาว บ่เบื่อ Twenty years old, talk with girls without feeling bored
สามสิบปี เสือสู้ ทุกท่า Thirty years old, as if a tiger capable of fighting every (obstacles in any) manners
สี่สิบปี ลาเมื่อ ก่อนไก่ Forty years old, say farewell just before rooster's crow (dawn)
ห้าปี ไปนากลับ มาเดินทอดหุ่ย Fifty years old, sit idly after came back from the paddy field
หกสิบปี เป่าขลุ่ย บ่ดัง Sixty years old, can't blow a flute
เจ็ดปี เดินทาง บ่ตรง Seventy years old, can't walk straight
แปดปี ลงเดิน บ่ได้ Eighty years old, can't get down to walk
เก้าปี ขี้ไหล บ่ฮู้ Ninety years old, does not aware of his diarhea (discharge feces)
หนึ่งร้อยปี ไข้ก็ตาย บ่ไข้ก็ตาย A hundred years old, whether getting sick or not, one is dead.

Thai Thesaurus

An article entitled "Why other languages don't use thesauruses like we do" which I stumbled upon prompted me to write this blog entry.

Yes, like English, Thai language also has "a" thesaurus, at least that 's the only one I am aware of. The tome, or compilation, by Prof. นววรรณ พันธุเมธา , was named คลังคำ which essentially means 'word treasury', similarly to the root "thesaurus". It 's an admirable work. So far it is in its 6th printing. The first printing, in my possession, was printed in B.E. 2544, or year 2001. So I think a number of Thai people are using the Thai thesaurus too.

I wished there were another one by different scholars, but Thai language experts seems to be rare.  I think, even better Thai Thesaurus should be online and software versions as well.

Good book: Parts of Speech in Thai: A Syntactic Analysis

I stumbled upon a nice Thai book, ชนิดของคำในภาษาไทย การวิเคราะห์ทางวากยสัมพันธ์ โดย ดร. อมรา ประสิทธิ์รัฐสินธุ์ (Parts of Speech in Thai: A Syntactic Analysis), by Dr. Amara Prasithrathsint, Professor Emeritus at Chulalongkorn University.  This is a result of her recent research work sponsored by TRF which used Lexicase Dependency Grammar, to analyze Thai words. LDG theory was initiated by the late Prof. Stanley Starosta  of Hawaii University,

I am not a linguist but I have been interested in Thai language and translations between Thai and English. This book is a good work. It dawns on me that we (Thais) use our words differently, with respect to 'part of speech' in a sentence, when compare to English.  I remember her one example, a word สวย, which means 'beautiful', but we Thais use it not as an adjective like in English, but as a verb. Interesting in deed. The author has different interpretation on Thai PoS compare to those of other Thai linguistic scholars and with the Thai Dictionary of the Royal Thai Society. This book serves as an important foundation work toward our better understanding of Thai linguistic structure, with enormous future applications, in my opinion, including machine translation.

What I think would be useful is a list (in 250 pages) of Thai 'verbs' used in various contexts.  This part alone would be useful for any future improvements of existing Thai dictionaries.

It is amazing that this first edition of the book, published in 2010 in a very limited number of 300, is still available at the CU bookstore.

I have yet to re-read it again. I think, after I understand better on Thai PoS,  my translation hobby could be somewhat improved.
